Bajaj Dominar 400 is the most premium bike from the Bajaj’s stable. It locked horn directly with the Royal Enfield 350cc bikes. “Hathi Mat Palo” advertisement of Bajaj Dominar 400 directly pitted it against the REs. But sadly Bajaj Dominar 400 failed to sell as much units as it should have sold. The fan following of Royal Enfield is something hard to break.
Bajaj Dominar 400 is a very potent bike. And in this detail review we tell you everything there is to know about it. And more importantly whether you should buy one or not?
Let’s start with the way the Bajaj Dominar 400 looks.
Table of Contents
Looks
Look from the front and you see a macho looking all LED headlight. We think it somewhat resembles to Pulsar NS200. But obviously is much more macho looking. The chunkier 43mm upside down forks give the front a muscular look. Over the headlight indicators are LED as well and are nicely integrated with the headlight. They give the front a premium look and feel.
Move to the side and the bike kind of loses its macho feel and does not look as macho as it looks from the front. The alloys are very nicely built and look very good and premium. The twin barrel exhaust also gives the bike more sportier look.
Move to the rear and the macho feel is back. The fat 150 section tyre gives the rear bulky feel. Bajaj’s signature twin tail lights looks good.
Sit on the bike and you will notice the large fuel tank that tells you that you seating on a big bike. Next thing that you will notice is the twin digital instrument consoles. The main instrument consoles displays the basic info like the tachometer, speedometer, fuel meter, average fuel economy, current fuel economy, and other indicators. The secondary instrument console displays the gear indicator, time and 2 trip meters.
Bajaj Dominar 400 has split seats that add to the sportiness of the bike.
Overall the bike has very neutral looking design. It is not much on the sportier side and also not the conventional looking cruising motorcycles. You may or may not like the design when you first see the bike. But the design kind of grows on you with time and you will not feel disappointed.
Engine and Performance
Bajaj Dominar 400 is powered by a 373.3cc single cylinder, liquid cooled engine that produces 40PS of maximum power and 35Nm of peak torque. It is the same engine that powers the KTM Duke 390 and RC 390. But it does not produce the same power output as it does on the KTM bikes. But never the less, the power outputs look impressive on the paper. And let’s find out how the bike performs on road.
Yes, the Bajaj Dominar 400 is powered by the same engine as the KTM Duke 390 and RC 390. But it no where performs the same as those bikes. Because the KTMs are more performance oriented bikes while the Bajaj Dominar 400 is focused more on the touring side. The power delivery in the Bajaj Domianr 400 is on the linear side and also the heavier weight of the bike slows it down a little bit.
But take the bike stand alone and you will not be disappointed. Bajaj Dominar 400 manages to do a 0-100kmph sprint in just 7.1secs. This is way better than the bikes it is pitted against.
The engine feels very refined and offers a very good mid range.
Rideability and Comfort
The handle bar of the Bajaj Dominar 400 is wide and is set upright, seat height is set at 800mm, foot pegs are not much rear set. All these give the rider an upright and relaxing seating posture. That is good for both small city rides as well as long highway rides.
The suspensions are set up in slightly softer side, and provide a very good jerk free riding experience.
The weight of the bike is on heavier side, it weighs around 187kgs. The bike manages its weight quite well and it is of no concern once the bike starts moving. However you can feel that heavy weight in the stop and go city traffic, where you have to manuever the bike between tight spaces.
The bike shines when it comes to the highway rides. The word for the highway rides is effortless. You can cruise all day at 120-125kmph in Bajaj Dominar 400 without breaking a sweat. At 125kmph the engine revs around 6500rpm and the bike feels very comfortable in holding the speed. There are not any vibrations at foot pegs, engine or at the handle bar.
Overall the Bajaj Dominar 400 offers a very comfortable riding experience. And it also offers a very good city as well as highway rideability. It is a bike that you can use for your daily commute. But it actually is a bike that you can take on your long routes without thinking twice.
Average
You can expect an overall average of around 28-30kmpl.
