How To Calculate Mileage Of Bike?
How to calculate the mileage of a bike? The rising petrol prices in India have left people asking this question.
People want to check the mileage of their bike so that they can know how much petrol expense they will have to bear in a month. But the question is how to actually do it.
Well, the simple formula for calculating the mileage of your bike is:
Mileage Of The Bike = Distance Traveled / Fuel Consumed
Now the question that arises is, how to find the distance traveled and fuel consumed?
There are two methods for measuring these values:
- Tank full to tank full method
- Tank empty to tank empty method
Let me tell you about these methods one by one.
Method 1: How To Check The Average Mileage Of A Bike Accurately?
The first method that we will be discussing is the tank full to tank full method. This is the most accurate method to find out the mileage of a motorcycle. If you want to know the exact mileage of your motorcycle then this method can help you.
To check the mileage of your bike from this method, follow the below steps:
- Go to a petrol pump and get a full tank of petrol i.e. ask them to fill the petrol until the bike’s fuel tank is full.
- Reset one of the trip meters on your bike to 0.
- Now ride the bike for at least 50 km. I will recommend you ride for 100 km for easier calculation. One thing that you have to note is that you don’t have to ride the bike on highways or a long stretch. Use the bike as you use it daily to go to the office or college. Keep using the bike until you see the 100 km on the trip meter.
- Once the 100 km is complete, go to the same petrol pump again. Ask them to fill the petrol until the motorcycle’s fuel tank is full.
- Note the number of liters of fuel that just got filled in your bike. The amount of fuel that you filled for the second time is the amount of fuel your bike consumed to run for 100 km.
Now you have the distance traveled i.e. 100 km, and you also have the fuel that your bike consumed. Place these values in the formula given above and you will get the mileage of your bike. Or you can also use our vehicle mileage calculator if you don’t want to do it manually.
For eg. suppose your bike consumed 1.2 liters of fuel to run for 100 km. Then to calculate the mileage of your bike, you have to divide 100 by 1.2. 100/1.2 = 83.33. Therefore your motorcycle returned a mileage of 83.33 kilometers per liter. As simple as that.
If you want to find out the average mileage of your bike then you will have to repeat this process 3-4 times. And then you can measure the average mileage of your motorcycle.
Method 2: How To Find Petrol Bike’s Mileage Per Litre?
The next method that you can use is the tank empty to tank empty method. This method is just the opposite of the full tank to full tank method.
However, this is not as accurate as the full tank method but will give you a general idea. It is not accurate because it involves emptying the fuel tank completely. And this is not possible because the fuel tank of a motorcycle has a lot of compartments inside and some fuel gets stuck in those compartments every time you empty it.
Cleanly emptying the fuel tank of your bike will require you to tilt your motorcycle left and right many times.
To calculate the mileage of a bike using this method, follow the below steps:
- Ride your motorcycle until its fuel tank gets empty. Remember to keep 1 liter of fuel in a bottle or something because you never know if you will get a petrol pump nearby or not when your bike stops.
- Once your bike stops, reset one of the trip meters to 0 and fill up the 1 liter of petrol in it.
- Then ride it again until the fuel tank gets empty.
- Once your bike stops again then note down the number of km you have covered in the trip meter.
Now you have the distance traveled i.e. km for which you rode your bike and fuel consumed which is 1 liter. Now divide the number of km by the fuel consumed and you will get the mileage of your bike.
For eg. if you ride your bike for 50 km in that 1 liter then the mileage of your bike is 50/1 = 50 kilometers per liter.
To know the average mileage of your bike, repeat this process 3 to 4 times and then average out the mileage readings.
So this is how you can check the mileage of any bike easily.
How Do You Measure Fuel Cost Per Km On Motorcycle?
The simple formula for calculating the fuel cost per km on your motorcycle is:
Fuel Cost Per Km = Petrol Price / Mileage Of Your Bike
If you want to find out the fuel cost per km for your bike then you can do so if you know the mileage of your bike and the cost of 1 liter of petrol.
You just have to divide the petrol price by the mileage of your bike.
For eg. Suppose the mileage of your bike is 50 kilometers per liter and the cost of 1 liter of petrol is ₹100. So the fuel cost per km will be ₹2 (100 divided by 50).
How To Increase The Mileage Of Bike?
The mileage of your bike actually depends on a lot of factors, which include:
- How do you accelerate and brake
- How you can change gears
