Why Measure Mileage Of Your Car?
Before we check how to calculate the mileage of your car. Let’s first understand why you should measure it in the first place. Because every car manufacturer tells the ARAI claimed mileage of their car, right? And these days, cars even show you the real-time mileage in their instrument cluster.
So why should you check the mileage of your car by yourself?
- The first reason is that you never get the ARAI claimed mileage in the real world. Because the mileage testing that they do is done in a controlled environment. And a car’s mileage depends on a lot of factors in real life.
- Second reason is the mileage that your car shows is also not accurate. And I have experienced it personally. The actual mileage of your car can be lower than the number showing on the instrument cluster or it can also be higher.
And that is why, you should measure the mileage of your car yourself in case you want to know about its real mileage.
How To Check The Mileage Of A Car Accurately?
To check the mileage of your car, you simply have to divide the number of km your car covered by the amount of fuel it consumed to cover that distance. As simple as that.
The formula for calculating the mileage of a car is:
Mileage Of Car = Distance Covered / Fuel Consumed
However, how to find out the distance covered and the fuel consumed is the main question.
So let me tell you how you can know these values to calculate the mileage of your car.
- Firstly, go to a trusted petrol pump and fill in the petrol/diesel. Tell them to fill the fuel until the fuel tank of your car is full.
- Now note down the reading of the odometer of your car. You can also reset one of the trip meters to measure the distance.
- Then drive your car for at least 100 kilometers. The more you drive the car the more accurate results you are going to get. Also, remember to drive the car as you drive it normally. Because how you drive your car can affect its mileage marginally. You can use the car for your daily use if you use it daily. It is not necessary to drive the car in a single day and you can take multiple days.
- Once you think you have driven enough then go to the same petrol pump again. And get the fuel tank of your car full.
- Note down the readings of the odometer and also the amount of fuel that you just filled in your car.
Now you have both the values, all you have to do now is put them in the formula for calculating the mileage of a car and you can know the mileage. Or you can also use a mileage calculator in case you don’t want to do the calculation manually.
There you have it, you now know the mileage of your car.
How To Calculate Average Mileage Of A Car?
If you don’t know then let me tell you your car does not return the same mileage every time. A lot of factors affect its mileage to a great extent. Even the tire pressure can affect the mileage of your car marginally.
So once you check the mileage of your car, it does not mean that your car will return that mileage every time you drive it.
If you want to calculate the true mileage of your car then you will have to find out its average mileage. To measure the average mileage of your car, you will have to do multiple mileage tests and then take out their average.
So follow the above mentioned steps and check the mileage of your car at least 5 times. And then take out their average to know the genuine or real mileage of your car.
For eg. suppose you did 5 mileage tests and you got five different mileages i.e. 12,11,14,11, and 13. Now to calculate the average mileage of your car, you have to add these values up and then divided the result by 5. (12+11+14+11+13)/5 = 12.2. So the average mileage of your car is 12.2 kmpl.
How To Increase The Mileage Of A Car?
Now that you know about the mileage of your car, let me tell you how you can increase it significantly.
As discussed, the mileage of a car depends on a lot of factors. Therefore you just need to take care of those factors and you will see an increase in the mileage of your car marginally.
- The first thing that you should do is maintain the optimal tire pressure. Regularly check the tire pressure to maintain it. Tire pressure can reduce the mileage of your vehicle by a great margin.
- Secondly, you should avoid applying sudden acceleration and brakes. Applying a sudden accelerator or brake can eat up a lot of fuel.
- Use AC when on highways. Open windows at high speed can actually decrease the mileage of your car.
- Reduce the weight of your car. The more the weight on your car is the less mileage it will return. So take out the unwanted things from your car that you always carry around.
