Firstly we will start with the way the Nexon looks.

Tata Nexon Review: Exterior

Tata has improved its cars drastically over the years.

And it is evidently visible on both inside and out of the Nexon.

Let’s take a closer look at the exterior of the SUV.

Front Looks

Tata Nexon Review - Front Looks

The front end of the Tata Nexon is divided into three parts.

The upper part has a piano black finish and houses the big Tata logo in the middle.

It also houses sleeker headlights that are nicely embedded with the front, giving the front a more elegant look.

The DRLs are also nicely embedded in the headlight unit and are in the shape of Tata’s new signature Tri-Arrow.

These DRLs also double up as indicators.

There is also a chrome line under the nose of Tata Nexon.

The middle part of the front is body-colored.

And the fog lights sit on both the ends of this middle part. And have C-shaped silver highlights.

Tata Nexon Review - Front Bumper

The lower part of the front houses a large grill that has a Tri-arrow pattern all over it.

Some of which are silver highlighted.

Overall the front fascia of Tata Nexon looks bold, elegant, and muscular.

And you will surely like it.

Side Looks

Tata Nexon Review - Side Looks

Move to the side and you will notice that the ground clearance (209mm) of the SUV is very good.

And it set up quite high.

Another noticeable thing from the side is its 16-inch alloy wheels.

Tata Nexon Review - Alloy Wheels

Which look good and suit the overall profile of the car but could have been better.

The car comes in dual-tone color.

The base of the windows and the roof is painted in white color

Because of these white highlights, you will notice that the SUV looks somewhat coupe-like.

Rear Looks

Tata Nexon Review - Rear Looks

The back of the SUV is where we feel that Tata could have done a better job.

While many would like the design of the back but we feel that the back design of Tata Nexon kind of gives it a boxy look.

However, the design elements at the back look quite good.

The tri-arrow design is used everywhere at the back.

Tata Nexon Review - Tail lights

The backlights also are in the shape of a tri-arrow.

The surround highlights of the backlights are also in the shape of a tri-arrow. That merges at the center with the Tata logo.

You get Nexon badging across the middle of the rear.

And the rear bumper also has the tri-arrow design at the sides of the number plate.

You also get C-shaped silver highlights around the reflectors.

And the tri-arrow shape is also used in the red glass of the reflectors.

Overall the Tata Nexon has done a good job on the exterior of the Nexon.

And it really looks bold and muscular.

Tata Nexon Review: Interior

Tata Nexon Review - Interiors

Tata has done an incredible job on the inside of the cabin too.

Step inside the cabin of Tata Nexon and you will have a smile on your face.

And once you close the door, you will have even a bigger smile on your face.

Because the thud of the closing door really tells you that the build quality is top-notch.

And this really is one of the safest SUVs in India right now.

The first thing that you will notice after sitting at the driver’s seat is the steering wheel.

It is nicely and neatly built.

And the leather-wrapped steering wheel looks premium.

The buttons on the steering wheel are also nicely built and integrated.

The flat bottom of the steering wheel gives it a sporty feel.

Moreover, the middle of the steering wheel is nicely designed and integrated.

To be very frank, we never liked the middle part of the steering wheel of other Tata cars.

It always looked out of place with an odd-looking bulky design.

But the steering wheel on the Nexon really looks good.

Tata Nexon Review - Instrument Console

The next thing that you will notice is the all-digital instrument cluster.

Tata has done a great job here too and the instrument cluster looks well designed and premium to look at.

And it does display plenty of information.

Watch all the information that it displays in the video below.

On the left of the instrument cluster is the 7” touch screen infotainment system.

It kind of looks small as compared to its competitor.

And also lacks the touch and feel. And it could have been better.

But it really is a great update over the last one.

The infotainment and AC controls are well designed and laid out.

And also are of very good quality.

The dashboard you get on the Tata Nexon again comes in three parts.

The upper part consists of the black-colored hard plastic with a dotted finish.

The middle part comes with shiny white color with tri-color highlights.

And the lower part is kind of off-whitish color.

Overall the Tata Nexon interior looks nicely designed and laid out.

And it feels good and premium too.

Tata Nexon Review: Space

Space is the department where you will not complain in the Tata Nexon.

The front row seats are spacious enough.

There are bottle holders on all the doors, which are big enough to hold large 1-liter bottles.

You also get an umbrella holder on the front right door.

Move to the rear seat and things are good here too.

There is a good amount of knee room.

The shoulder room is quite decent too.

Moreover, you can easily fit two adults and a kid in the rear seat without any complaints.

The boot space of Tata Nexon is quite good too.

It is measured at 350 liters.

And is more than enough for your weekend family trips.

It is not the best in its class but it is also not the worst.

Renault Kiger offers the best boot space in this segment.

Tata Nexon Review: Engine and Performance

Tata Nexon comes with two engine options.

One is a 1.2-liter Revotron turbo petrol engine and the other is a 1.5-liter Revotorq diesel engine.

The 1.2-liter 3 cylinder Revotron turbo petrol engine produces a maximum power of 120PS.

And produces a maximum torque of 170Nm.

It comes with two transmission options.

One is 6-speed manual transmission and the other is a 6-speed AMT transmission.

The 1.5-liter 4 cylinder Revotorq diesel engine produces a maximum power of 110PS.

And produces a maximum torque of 260Nm.

It again comes with two transmission options.

One is 6-speed manual transmission and the other is a 6-speed AMT transmission.

Now, before we get into the performance of these engines, let us first discuss the driving modes that the Tata Nexon gets.

The SUV gets 3 Driving modes:

  1. Eco Mode
  2. City Mode
  3. Sports Mode

And these modes can be controlled by a rotary nob, which sits on the side of the gear lever.

The only difference between the driving modes is the throttle response.

And you can really feel the difference.

The throttle response in the Eco mode is the least responsive of the three.

And in the City mode it little bit better than Eco Mode.

But you will really have to observe it closely to notice.

And needless to say, the throttle response is the most responsive in the Sports mode.

Now let us look at the performance of both the engines.

Both the engines do fairly well in the city. However, it is on the highways that the engines shine.

Since it is turbo-powered, the petrol engine is not much responsive under 2000 rpm.

And in the bumper-to-bumper city drives you will really feel the lag.

Also, the lag is quite evident in the city and eco mode, especially in the automatic transmission.

You can really feel the lag when the automatic transmission shifts between gears.

However, in the sports mode, the lag is comparatively much less.

And once it crosses the 2000 rpm mark it comes to life and pulls cleanly all the way up to 5500 rpm.

There is also turbo lag in the Diesel engine under 1500 rpm as well, like other diesel engines.

But it offers a punchy performance once past 1500 rpm.

But once you hit the 1500 rpm mark and you will feel the turbo kicking in and you will be getting an ample amount of torque.

But again go past the 2500 rpm mark and you will again feel that lag.

The engine redlines at 4000 rpm.

And most of its performance is centered around 1500-2500 rpm.

Overall the performance of both the engines is pretty good and you will not complain at all.

Tata Nexon Review: Drive and Handling

The Tata Nexon offers a very good ride and handling character too.

Suspension is nicely set up and you also get high-profile tires in the SUV.

As a result, you will not feel those bad road patches at all.

The SUV just eats up those small potholes and does not let you feel a thing.

Body roll is also well controlled in the Tata Nexon, so you can quickly change lanes as well.

And also in the hilly areas, the SUV does give you the confidence to push it around.

So the ride quality is what you can expect from an SUV.

The clutch, gearbox, and steering wheel are also set on the lighter side.

As a result, driving this car is kind of effortless in the bumper-to-bumper city traffic.

Also, the steering wheel offers crisp feedback, so the car really goes where you exactly want it to go.

Since the body roll is well controlled, so the car feels very sure-footed and planted at high speeds.

And you can cruise comfortably at triple-digit speeds without worrying much.

You also get cruise control to make your highway drives even more effortless.

Overall the Tata Nexon is one of the best fun-to-drive cars in its segment.

And you will love driving it in the city and on the highway as well.

But just remember to drive it in the Sports mode to get the most out of it.

And the same engine can give you a mileage of around 15-16 km/l on the highway.

We have even extracted a mileage of around 19 km/l from the Tata Nexon XZ+ petrol automatic, by driving it in the cruise control at 1500 rpm.
